Health and Wellness in Texarkana.

Whether you’re new to the area, or looking to make a lasting lifestyle change, there are many ways to embrace a health and wellness in Texarkana. In recent years, the area has seen huge growth and the range of health and wellness opportunities continues to increase. If you’re looking for yoga, yup, you can find that. Looking for organic and natural grocery options? Yes, we have that too! Texarkana also has a huge range of group fitness options, gyms, plus an amazing trail system for hiking, walking, biking or running. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve called Texarkana home since 2014 and have personal experience with nearly all of the places listed. Use the Table of Contents to jump to sections. Let’s get to it! Health food stores and specialty foods.

As for me and my family, having access to natural and organic food options matters. Personally, I have Celiac Disease (no gluten) and Alpha Gal Syndrome (red meat allergy, caused by a tick) along with other food allergies. So, having access to some specialty grocery stores is important to me! Luckily, in recent years Texarkana has grown to have two of these!

The Granary.

The Granary has been a Texarkana staple since before we moved here. The store is well organized and has almost everything you could want, with the exception of fresh produce. They have many well stocked freezers with a wide range of meats, fruits, and other products. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, they may be able to order it for you. I’ve ordered an entire case of MALK oatmilk before. They also have a large section of vitamins and supplements, along with natural products for home and body care. The Granary is the original stop for health and wellness in Texarkana and continues to be a place that I shop regularly.

NOTE: they are only open Monday to Friday, no weekends. They also do not have a website or any social media. If you have questions, it’s best to call or go in person.

Back to Roots.

Back to Roots is the new natural grocery store in town and they also have a wide selection. But, same as The Granary, no fresh produce. They carry a full range of Just Ingredients products, along with tons of other natural and organic snack foods, kitchen staples, and frozen goods. I’ve picked up some delicious gluten free treats there, along with my favorite Simple Mills brand snacks as well. They can also order in almost anything that you may be looking for, just ask! Back to Roots does have Saturday hours and they often have pop-ups or other events happening that day as well. Follow their Facebook or Instagram pages for details.

Sullifarm and Kitchen.

Sullifarm and Kitchen is a long standing, farm to table type local business. The owner, Annemarie Sullivan, believes in the organic, local, slow food movement. She’s the head chef at The Primary Commons, a farm to table restaurant in Texarkana. Her shop, located in Hooks, has her grass fed beef and pork, baked goods from local artisan bakers Fairy Tale Garden and Farms, plus a selection of over local and hand made goods and foods.

Follow Sullifarm and Kitchen on Facebook for updates on hours and product availability.

Fairy Tale Garden and Farm.

This is one of the best artisan bread bakers in Texarkana! Fairy Tale Garden and Farm has a variety of sourdough bread products and many other things. You can find their items at several locations across the ArkLaTex. They provide the bread for The Primary Commons as well! Recently, they opened a shop in Texarkana where you can pick up preorders and shop the artisan and kitchen boutique while you’re there. The best way to stay up to date on their products and events is to follow their Fairy Tale Garden and Farms Facebook Page.

Their shop is located at 2506 Old Red Lick Rd, Texarkana. It’s open on Thursdays and Sundays from 2 to 6 PM.

Better Bits Bakery.

Better Bits is an entirely gluten free home baker. You can find him at various vendor events, farmer’s markets, and sometimes at local boutiques too. You can also place preorders and special orders. If you don’t see what you need, just ask! Payments are taken via Venmo and Paypal. To see what he has available, follow his Better Bits Bakery Facebook page.

Yoga and Pilates Studios.

There are lots of great places to practice yoga in Texarkana, with a variety of different studios and variations of yoga practices. Yoga (or any form of mindful movement exercise) is such a powerful thing to add to your exercise routine. Below is a list of some of my yoga studios for health and wellness in Texarkana.

Prodigy Life.

Prodigy Life Studio is a (faith based) yoga, pilates and fitness studio located in downtown Texarkana, Arkansas. The studio is beautiful with a large practice room for a variety of disciplines, plus a boutique that’s always full of beautiful items. Some of the forms of classes they offer are: Balance and Align, Barre, Chill Flow, Feet Up, Yoga Sculpt, and Yoga for Healing. In addition to the classes they also offer life coaching and have an infrared sauna with red light therapy.

Follow the Prodigy Life Facebook page for updates on the schedule and special events.

Texarkana Yoga.

Texarkana Yoga is located on Mall Drive in Texarkana, Texas. They have multiple instructors and offer a range of yoga classes. Some of the classes include: hot yoga, warm yoga, cool yoga, and some themed classes or special events.

For the most up to date schedule, follow the Texarkana Yoga Facebook page.

SlingFit Texarkana.

SlingFit Texarkana is a super fun studio. They are the only bungee fitness studio in the area and they offer classes for beginners through advanced. I’ve tried it and I can confirm: it’s tons of fun! SlingFit also offers yoga classes for all levels, some dance fitness classes, and always has unique events on the calendar as well. Follow the SlingFit Texarkana Facebook page for the most up to date schedule.

Gyms.

When it comes to health and wellness in Texarkana there are a variety of options, including traditional gyms. It’s a mix of long standing local gyms, plus some chains, with a range of membership options available too. Some of the traditional gyms in Texarkana are:

  • Legend’s Gym – The gym that is a legend itself. It’s been around for a long time and it has everything you’d expect for a classic gym. They also have a women’s only workout area.
  • Planet Fitness – This Texarkana gym (part of the national chain) just moved into a location at Central Mall.
  • Pinkerton Center – This gym is the fitness center at Texarkana College. Memberships are paid by cash or check. They do have an indoor gym and racquetball facilities, along with an outdoor tennis center. Plus, all of the cardio and weight equipment you might need.
  • Anytime Fitness – There are 3 locations for this gym chain in the Texarkana area. One on the Texas side, one on the Arkansas side, and one in nearby Wake Village.
  • Gymbox Gym – Offers weight lifting equipment, cardio equipment, classes and personal training.
  • H & H Fitness – Offers weight lifting and cardio equipment, and personal training. 24 hour access.

Group Fitness.

These gyms are all class based gyms, where you sign up to attend at a certain time and move through the workout on your own, but in a group setting. Some are set up as circuits and some are HIIT type work outs. Here are a selection of group exercise gyms:

  • Fit 5:22 – A CrossFit style, HIIT group workout gym located in Nash, Texas.
  • CrossFit TXK Elite – A CrossFit affiliate located in Summerhill Road, Texarkana, Texas.
  • CrossFit Texarkana – The Arkansas side CrossFit affiliate.
  • Wacha Resolutions – A group workout facility in downtown Texarkana, Texas. Offering multiple class times each day, with youth fitness classes as well.
  • Butterfly Fitness Center – A circuit style group fitness studio designed for women only. Located in Texarkana, Texas on Richmond Road.
  • FiA Texarkana – A faith based, free group workout for women. It takes place outdoors and utilizes body weight movements, combining strength training and cardio circuits.
  • F3 Texarkana – A faith based, free group workout for men. It takes place outdoors and utilizes body weight movements, combining strength training and cardio circuits.

Other types of workout classes.

There are a few other types of workouts you can find in Texarkana. Both of the community (or city) recreation centers offer movement classes such as Tai Chi or other things. You can also find combat sports gyms too. Here are two of them:

Where to swim.

One thing that is a bit lacking in Texarkana is places to swim. As a former collegiate swimmer, I really miss having access to public swimming pools. I’m hopeful that in the future it will get better and maybe we will get a pool eventually. Everyone keep asking Texas A & M Texarkana (nicely) to build a pool. In the meantime, here are your two (very limited) options for swimming:

  • Texarkana, Texas School District Aquatic Center – The pool is on the Texarkana College campus but is managed by Texarkana, Texas school district. There is a community open swim during the daytime, usually 12 to 2 PM on weekdays, and a Masters swimming group that runs practices alongside the youth swim team, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 PM.
  • Hope Aquatics Center – About 30 minutes from Texarkana, an outdoor pool. The city of Hope has announced construction plans for a new community recreation center with an indoor pool, but the process has not started yet.

Recreation Centers.

Texarkana has a few options for local, community based recreation centers. They’re both on the smaller side but still offer a variety of classes and wellness opportunities.

  • Southwest Recreation Center – Located in Texarkana, Texas. Memberships are free. They offer a monthly schedule with classes, open gym time, and other activities. I set up a homeschool gym time for kids 10 and up on Thursdays. Check their Facebook page for updates.
  • Arkansas Recreation Center – The Texarkana, Arkansas side recreation center. Memberships are $30 for the year. They offer a wide range of classes and open gym times, plus have soccer and baseball fields outside as well.
  • Collins Senior Center – The Texarkana, Texas parks and recreation department manage this center and offer classes for senior adults.

Outdoor fitness.

There’s nothing better than getting fresh air, touching grass, and enjoying some sunshine while you exercise. There are lots of places to chase health and wellness in Texarkana in the outdoors. Here are a few of my favorite things:

  • Fitness Court at Spring Lake Park – a free workout space (shaded) at Spring Lake Park with equipment for a workout circuit. There is signage to help direct your workout and you can learn more on the US fitness court website. Spring Lake Park also has a very nice paved walking trail (1.5 mile Philip McDougal Trail).
  • Outdoor workout area at Bringle Lake West – a free outdoor workout space with fixed equipment for various exercises. It’s right next to the lake, under a pavilion.
  • Bringle Lake East and West Trails – there are hiking and biking trails that go around the lake, plus a beautiful (paved) walking path and boardwalk. There is also a sand volleyball pit and green space as well.
  • Bobby Ferguson Park Walking Trail – a paved and lit walking trail that is almost 1 mile, winding around the lake at this Texarkana, Arkansas park.
  • Tennis and Pickleball – The Southwest Center in Texarkana, Texas has two public tennis courts and six public pickleball courts. The facility is fenced and has lights as well.
  • Texarkana College has a half mile paved walking trail near the Pinkerton Fitness Center.

Be sure to check out my guide to the best parks in Texarkana for more outdoor recreation opportunities.

Unique wellness opportunities.

Health and wellness in Texarkana comes in many forms. Just like there are many ways to exercise and take care of yourself. If you’re looking for some more non traditional or alternative health and wellness options, Texarkana has those too.

Saunas.

Infrared saunas and heat therapy are a wonderful way to add some detox processes to your wellness regiment. I’ve had such a positive experience with light therapy and infrared sauna that we bought one and have one at our home. Here are places you can enjoy a sauna experience in Texarkana:

  • H & H Fitness – Has a sauna and is also a full gym with memberships available.
  • Prodigy Life – Offers an infrared sauna in addition to being a yoga and pilates studio.
  • HotWorx TXK – Book online to reserve your sauna and choose your video based class to take.
  • Mi Clinica Hispanica – A sauna studio that is inside the area’s only bilingual medical clinic.

Rest, recovery, and massage therapy.

Self care, relaxation, rest and recovery are just as important when it comes to health and wellness. Massage therapy is a great way to care for your body, offer stress relief and take care of aches and pains. There are many places across Texarkana to sign up for massage therapy, or other recovery therapies. Here are a few that I am familiar with.

  • Time in a Bottle Day Spa – Day spa with a full range of options in Texarkana, Texas. Including massage therapy, facials, nail services, and waxing. They also offer lymphatic draining massage and fibromyalgia massage.
  • Ascension Massage Therapy – Located in Texarkana, Texas. Book online on their website.
  • Southern Rehab – Full service physical therapy center, including aquatic therapy and dry needling.

Texarkana based wellness brands.

One really unique (and fun) thing about Texarkana is the fact that we have a few organics companies. These businesses offer organic, nontoxic body care, home care, and more. Both have a wide range of products that are made right here in the Texarkana area and are recognized nationally.

  • Rowe Casa Organics – I regularly use the hair spritz and scalp serum.
  • Lavender Thorne – The elderberry syrup is a staple in our house during flu season. We also love the hand soap and pillow spray for guests when they visit.

Physicians and alternative medicine.

Texarkana does not have a lot of options for functional medicine, or naturopath physicians. These practitioners tend to look at the body as a whole with all of it’s systems, rather than just looking at one individual symptom. For me, it was a naturopath physician (in Arizona) who finally discovered my Celiac Disease after many years of health issues. Personally, I support both traditional medicine and a more functional approach as well. there are a few places in Texarkana that may offer this more holistic approach.

Northfield Clinic.

Northfield Clinic offers a patient-centered approach to wellness, focusing on individualized care that supports overall health and mobility. The clinic is a local option for those seeking integrative, non-invasive services as part of a balanced approach to physical well-being. Their focus is Oriental medicine and they off acupuncture.

Medical Spas.

Texarkana actually has quite a few medical spas. While these may not fall directly under the health and wellness in Texarkana umbrella, I did want to include two that I am familiar with. They are:

  • Eternal Beauty Medical Spa – I’ve used this medical spa for immune boost IV’s after traveling. They offer traditional medical spa treatments like injections, facials, body treatments, along with various IV’s and hormone therapy as well.
  • Renew Integrated Medical Spa – This clinic does mention functional medicine on their website, along with traditional medical spa offerings like injections and body treatments. They also offer massage therapy.

Health and wellness in Texarkana: things to consider.

As always, please consult with your primary care physician before starting any new workout routine. Be mindful of your current health and fitness levels as you jump into something new, being careful to meet yourself where you’re at and scale accordingly. I’m a big believer in doing what is right for your body, in the present moment. The same can be said for diets and nutrition, there’s no one size fits all. For example: a keto (or carnivore) diet would end me because I’m allergic to eggs and all red meat.

Take time to see where you’re at, look at what will be the best type of gym or class for you, set some goals and go get them!

If you’re into the outdoors and hiking, I have something you may be interested in.
